Artist's Comments

On February 14, 2008, my school newspaper published a special V-Day edition. V-Day is a rape awareness day sponsored by an organization affiliated with Eve Ensler, the producer of The Vagina Monologues. A graphic on the front page was an anatomical diagram of a vagina, the type one might find in a health text book. Shortly after the paper's distribution, the administration announced that teachers were not to distribute the paper and began confiscating issues, allegedly even snatching copies from students' hands as they read. The administration called the vagina graphic "obscene material". The next day, in protest, several students wore t-shirts reading "My Vagina is 'Obscene'." Many were sent to the dean and at least four were sent home for the day. I made these flyers and posted them around the school in protest of the administrations blatant censorship.

hehehe i don't see how any one could legitimately consider vaginas obscene! (especially when used for an awareness event)

Good job, friend!

You know what we really need? National P-Day.

except it's women who are constantly being told their sexuality is dirty, not men.

every time you see an axe commercial, or a movie or tv show about guys trying to get some, it's p-day

I'm fine with women being comfortable with that sorta thing. My real objection is to the celebration of Ensler's play, which is filled to the brim with anti-male sentiment.

i've heard. never seen it, but it sucks that the extremists have become the posterchildren of feminism

I agree. I'm an advocate for men's rights, but I will admit that a number of good things have come out of the feminist movement--Improved workplace safety, more flexible work schedules, and having women on the police force has taught male officers that being tough and brutal isn't always the solution.
We must cherish feminism's baby instead of its bathwater.

Well, when men turn 18, we are forced by law to sign over our bodies to the government (who calls it registering for the draft), but women don't have to.
Also, courts are very biased towards mothers in custody battles, as well as sentencing. Women almost always receive lighter sentences than men for committing the same crime. There's very little work being done to help men who are abused by their wives, which I saw firsthand in my parents' relationship. My mom hit my dad repeatedly and threw things at him, yet he never raised a finger in his own defense.
There are no men's studies at universities. By men's studies, I mean the equivalent of women's studies, which would be an examination of a man's role in history, questioning it, and offering him some of the better points of the female role (such as staying at home and taking care of the children).
Yet another area in which men are harmed is in our culture's acceptance of men getting beaten up and bashed (such as football, pro wrestling, and boxing) as entertainment.
I'm also pushing for the government to create an Office of Men's Health. Men are just as likely to die of prostate cancer as women are of breast cancer, yet breast cancer receives 660% more research funding. Men are also twice as likely to commit sucide as women, and men live seven years shorter than women on average, which is interesting when you consider that the gap in the 20s was just one year.
What I want to happen culturally is for men to stop viewing women as pleasure objects and for women to stop viewing men as success objects. They should both view the other as love objects.
That's it in a nutshell.
